American Vampire Vol. 2 Kindle & comiXology

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 645 ratings

While trafficking in a bestselling sub-genre, AMERICAN VAMPIRE introduces a new strain of vampire -- a more muscular and vicious species, born of the American West. It's Las Vegas circa 1935, and Skinner Sweet and our gal Pearl are about to learn the hard way that the bloodsuckers in Hollywood were nothing compared to what awaits them in Sin City. In just a few short years, young police Chief Cash McCogan has watched his native city of Las Vegas go from cow-town to wild, glittering boomtown. And when the bodies of prominent businessmen start showing up drained of blood, Chief McCogan finds himself facing a threat much darker and deadlier than anything he could have imagined . . . and the only sure bet in town is that Skinner and Pearl are right in the thick of it. I write comic books! Growing up, I always wanted to write comics, but I ended up trying my hand at fiction first. I got my MFA from Columbia University, published a book of short stories with The Dial Press in 2006 called Voodoo Heart, then finally broke into comics in 2009 and haven't looked back since. I've worked extensively for DC Comics, writing such titles as Batman, Detective Comics, Justice League, the comic event books DC Dark Knights Metal and Death Metal, and Swamp Thing, among others. I've also created a number of series with some great co-creators and partners -- books like We Have Demons, Clear, Night of the Ghoul, Nocterra, American Vampire, Wytches, the Wake, AD: After Death, and more... I live in NY with my wife, Jeanie and our three boys. I am also a big fan of Elvis Presley.

If you haven't heard the news yet, American Vampire is still awesome. After Stephen King's contributions to the beginning chapter in the series, many fans/critics worried how Scott Snyder would handle the story on his own. I can assure you, those worries can be safely put to rest.

Volume 2 collects two story arcs, 'Devil in the Sand', issues 6-9 and 'The Way Out', issues 10 & 11. It also continues the top-notch hardcover collection of what is one of Vertigo's instant classics. The story is definitely worth re-reading and sharing with friends, and these books are built to endure, not just last. The dust-jacket is unusually thick, and the same can be said about the fan-preferred glossy pages.

'Devil in the Sand' takes place 11 years after the first chapter ended. Snyder takes the series to even darker territory, and he also reigns in the action for some old western cop-drama. It manages to be about the main characters Pearl & Skinner, while focusing more on Chief McCogan's story as well. 'Devil in the Sand' concludes in a tragic yet totally awesome way.

In 'The Way Out', a few over-arching concerns catch up with Pearl and Henry such as Pearl's old friend, Hattie and Henry's continued aging. It's probably the most personal chapter in American Vampire so far, as it gives a raw and fresh perspective on love between an immortal vampire and a mortal human.

I love Rafael Albuqueregue's artwork. He shows an almost uncanny command for the building blocks of the comic medium. It's like he just pulls mastered techniques out of his ugh.. thinking cap. 'Devil in the Sand's look has a grittier feel to it, mostly due to beautifully done ink-washing and effective shadowing.

I'd like to point out that guest talent Mateus Santolouco, pencils issues 10 & 11. He does a pretty bang-up job of working with the established design and style for the artwork. Much like Albuquereque, I think Santolouco owes a lot to comic series from the 80's like Grimjack or Swamp Thing.

American Vampire is not a re-vamp(haha.. get it?) of the vampire genre. If anything it's taking the genre back to many of its roots. Skinner has claws and fangs; he's not going to get glitter on your wood stake. (Did I mention it's not for kids?) The series works within vampire lore, and also as a western. The story itself spans across decades of American history. To say it's well written is an understatement. Scott Snyder is a booming talent in the comic industry right now, and this is definitely his first masterpiece. I really can't say much more about Albuquereque, other than he's definitely a name I'm going to follow from now on.

Not as good as book 1, but still very entertaining. I love the art; it is so colorful & well drawn. Some of the best GN art I have seen yet! (Though I am far from an aficionado!) I found the first story to be more gripping in this volume, though the second story was pretty obviously just setting up for whatever will be coming next. Which I can't wait to see. I love the different vampire species & I really hope that we will get to see\learn about more such species on upcoming volumes. I was a little disappointed that we didn't see more of the ancient Gaelic Prime vamps... & I also felt that this issue was pretty slow on Skinner sightings, too. Although what few scenes he was in were...chilling. Bottom line is these graphic novels are beautifully done, well written, & oh, so original. I'm so glad Kindle suggested them to me. Recommended!

Also great great artwork. The drawing, the lettering the colors everything about this comic is great. I think anyway. Excited with every turn of the page and can't wait to read the next volume. Love skinner sweet and can't see where things go with Pearl and her story line which has taken on a new and old reason to watch her back.

I'm 61 years old. Can't remember when I last read a "comic book", and I originally started the American Vampire graphic novel series because the first was co-written by Stephen King.
Didn't know what to expect except "not much", and I'm happy to admit I was wrong. These are terrific. I really enjoy the pace of the writing in unison with the art work. The story telling is top notch and I eagerly look forward to the next one.
Woo hoo! Helluva ride!

I wasn't a huge comic fan growing up as a child, and haven't as an adult. This comic is awesome. It's sometimes hard to follow the story as it moves between locations and time. I think test is one of the interesting characteristics of the series. I still have 4 volume to read!

Blood drips as Skinner Sweet and Pearl Jones continue on into the year 1937, when an ancient vamp takes a bite out of the developers of the then-new Hoover Dam. And an old friend is about to make her appearance in Pearl’s life, as she and her husband, Henry take a downtime in suburbs of California while dealing with a forces behind the shadows of a local club.

If you like Vampires, fictional period pieces, and entertainment all in all, let you’re eyes and teeth sink into this book and enjoy it’s bittersweet flavors.

good stories and the art was excellent

I'm intrigued enough with the series to keep going, but maybe just. This volume wasn't nearly as compelling as the first but was more entertaining than many a movie I've paid to see.

5.0 out of 5 stars American Vampire Vol. 2

When the owners of a dam outside Las Vegas begin to die in mysterious circumstances in 1936, local law enforcement request assistance from the FBI. When the cause of death is judged to be vampiric, it may be a good job that the agents aren't really Hoover's Movers, but part of a British Society of Vampire Hunters.

A great storyline and some compelling artwork combine to make this an excellent book from Scott Snyder. Pearl Jones evolves as America develops and may be one of the most interesting vampires characters of the modern era.

American Vampire is an amazingly different and new take on vampires in the 21st century which has been saturated with weird sparkling vampire romance stories(not taking any names but you know who you are). The gritty plot goes very well with the rustic art by Albuquerque. I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to getting to the next volume. Scott Snyder is perhaps the best writer of this decade and this book is one of the reasons why. The condition of the book wss solid and I received it within 4 days. Great buy, do check it out.

The mystery, the legend, the adventure, the seduction and some badass vampires!

Scott Synder gather them all in this second volume adding some more intriguing characters.

Even though we don't have more Sthephen King as co-writer, as we did in the first, it still an amazing graphic novel to follow.

Scott Snyder is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. My wife showed this to me when the single issues started. I quickly shrugged it off as just another vampire story in a day when all we get is chezzy vampires.

Wow, I was wrong. The characters are excellent, the art is supperb, and this story will keep us coming back for more.

Snyder is attempting to create a whole world populated by many races of Vampires. He does this very well. His main characters are Skinner Sweet, and Pearl Jones. Two very different characters trying to exist in the same world.

I can't speak highly enough about this series.

Amazon does not have the 1st book in stock at the moment. I do recommend waiting to read that one first. Stephen KIng writes Skinner's origin for that book.
