Along with Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Millar has been one of the key writers for Marvel Comics in the 21st century. After proving himself in the ’90s as a talent to watch while writing for DC Comics and the UK comic 2000AD, his arrival to Marvel came at a time when Ultimate Spider-Man had just shot up the sales charts. It was in this environment that Millar made his first major contribution to Marvel with Ultimate X-Men, as Millar integrated forty years’ worth of X-Men history, characters and lore into a solid two-year run, making the companion title to Ultimate Spider-Man every bit the creative and commercial success. Next up was The Ultimates, a new rendering of the Avengers that was to continue building on the success of the Ultimate line. He and artist Bryan Hitch pulled it all off in spades: The Ultimates and its sequel, Ultimates 2, were ensconced at the top of the sales charts every month; what’s more, they were critical successes, as well. Meanwhile, Millar was invited to enter the regular Marvel Universe to take a stab at two of its most iconic characters: Spider-Man and Wolverine. Paired with industry heavyweights to draw his stories — Terry Dodson on Marvel Knights Spider-Man and John Romita Jr. on Wolverine — Millar brought the same fast-paced and cleverly constructed plots with which his Ultimate fans were already familiar. Amid building a small library of Millarworld indie comic books — including the titles Chosen and Wanted, the latter of which was turned into a Hollywood blockbuster starring Angelina Jolie — he managed to write Civil War, the epic seven-issue miniseries that definitively reshaped the landscape of Marvel’s heroes. Kick-A**, a Marvel Icon project done in tandem with John Romita Jr., made an impressive impact on the sales chart before also being adapted for a major motion picture. In addition, Millar has reunited with Civil War artist Steve McNiven in both the pages of Wolverine and their creator-owned book Nemesis.

Great read with a twist at the end

I liked it . . . i like it enough to want more . . . .which can only be a good thing i guess. . . . unless you are a particularly competative rival comic book writer . . . then you will think its a bad thing . . .

In summary, good if you like reading comics. . .

The only problem with this book is it leaves you wanting the next volume...which, apparently, has yet to be written. Anyway, a great account of what things would look like if the messiah, and the anti-messiah, were to show up in this culture. Good stuff.

I really liked this book, but I don't feel rating it higher than 3 stars for a couple reasons.
1. My biggest problem is the dialogue. While it takes place in the 80's, the kids don't really speak how American kids spoke at the time, it feels more like how British kids spoke. (That may be an odd thing to say unless you know Mark Waid, the writer, is from the U.K. and I've spent far too much time watching movies from the era).
2. The sequel, promised to come out at the end of the book, by 2009, has yet to see the light of day with no word as to wether or not it's even written let alone drawn.
3. The printing is subpar. The spine of the book looks week and upon multiple readings I'm expecting it to fall apart as my other trades from Image printed in China which have.
That said, it is a unique take on the End of Days story and if you enjoy comics based on Revelations than this is well worth the read. I am looking forward to the sequel and hope its coming is just around the corner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cadê a continuação?

O título dessa resenha é a única pergunta possível após ler esse encadernado? Mark Millar simplesmente deixa aquele gosto a mais, e o autor sequer esboçou uma continuação pra essa obra maravilhosa. Uma pena.

3.0 out of 5 stars MILLAR le théologien
Reviewed in France on August 19, 2009

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it!!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 30, 2014
I knew nothing about this story, and I thought it was fantastic.
Without going into details, and giving away spoilers; It starts off like stand by me, and then develops into a pubescent teen who also has to deal with the fact that he may very well be the second coming of Christ himself.

Read it.

The only thing I will say is that it seems to be leading up to something else. Something that hasn't happened yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting take on the second coming
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 1, 2009
I'm not sure if this is a convincing take on the second coming and how a small town would react to a Jesus-like figure emerging in their midst. The story is interesting and the artwork faultless but i'm not sure if comic-books (sorry, graphic novels) are the right place for something of such complexity and depth. I understand the need for ellipsis and the shortage of space of the medium, but the pace is too quick and many of the scenario's are unbelievable. What I'm saying, I think, is that it lacks a sense of realism and I found it hard to suspend my disbelief for many of the conceits of the narrative. I was also disappointed that the 'new' Jesus' 'path' follows that of the original Jesus, except that the names have been changed as an 'update'. I understand that people need 'signs' to show them that this is Jesus reincarnate but I would have liked something bolder that imagined a new set of miracles and a different set of circumstances under which they are performed.

Perhaps all my gripes will be answered in Book 2 as Jodie comes to terms with Global media and the reactions of hyper-capitalism to 'faith' rather than the false idols of consumption (i'm an athiest, by the way!)

I know this sounds as if I don't like it but I will be buying Book 2! Well worth the money!

(p.s. Buy 'Red Son'. It's excellent!)
