Collects America Chavez: Made In The USA (2021) #1-5.

America Chavez is incredible — her origins, her strength, her dimension-shattering star portals! But when the foundation of everything she believes is shaken, America must stand up and confront the parts of herself she’s been running from. Her life is about to be shattered into a million pieces by a mysterious adversary. When her tormentor is revealed, their face will be shocking, to say the least — but it’s what they reveal that will rock her world. And then? It’s just a matter of whether or not to believe them. From writer Kalinda Vazquez (Marvel’s Runaways) and artist Carlos Gómez (AMAZING MARY JANE) comes an explosive, brand-new story all about what made America Chavez who she is — and what she’ll do to protect the ones she loves.

This is one of the best written and graphically designed comic books ever. As a Greek Latina, it was impactful for me to see a Latina superhero. America Chavez is truly incredible. Thank you to everyone involved in making her story.

I mean, come on, Vazquez. You nerfed America's powers!? I can't speak for other fans, obviously, but I enjoyed my flying brick superhero who can EASILY punch holes into other dimensions, keep up with Monica Rambeau's speed, and exchange some blows with Thanos. That was part of the fun of her. She was like a little Gohan in the Marvel Universe, a prodigy in potential power and she probably hadn't even unleashed her FULL potential yet, what with being so young. But if this volume is an indication of how she's going to be written going forward, especially if the focus of her character is going to be (ugh) spending time searching for some cure instead of being an authority on the multiverse, then let me know when Al Ewing or Joe Casey write the character again. Because this kind of story for America going forward seems pretty uninspired and uninteresting. But 4 points overall on a decent enough story one might write if one HAD to retcon America's origin story. But I really don't get why that was necessary anyway. She was fine the way she was.

To preface it, I bought this from THriftbooks. It was out of stock at the time on amazon. This mini was rather fun, and I can admit I bought it to support it after the hate the artist got on twitter. The character was largely meh to me but between how much hate he got and the young actress who is playing the character because she doesn't have the right shade of skin or preferences.... Oh I hope they get plenty of FU money in line with Rowling.

Now all of that out of the way the good of the series is Kalinda Vazquez. She wrote a new origin story that has more thought to it and breaks down the ridiculousness original origin showing how bad it was. I imagine it was done to make the character more accessible and able to be understood for those who watch Doctor Strange 2 but doesn't mean she didn't do a great job.

Carlos Gomez has done beautiful work and isn't afraid to make women look like females compared to many recent marvel characters. (cite how Carol Danvers went from Ms Marvel to butch captain marvel now or she hulk though even she has returned to her old design thankfully). All of the discourse he got made me want to support him and he does well so I am glad to spend the money and hope he stays making appealing characters.

The story is alright, not great but workable, this needs more issues, more of a solid run then possibly just a short. It is one of the few recent comics that is not a collected hardcover omnibus that I have bought because recent marvel and DC have been so lackluster.

Personally, I thought it was really fun to see America’s powers, and what she can really do. But the storyline was quite boring.

Why do some writers feel they must rewrite characters, changing their background and even family?
Lazy writing (common), or editorial pressure?
America's past was retconned, but why?
I am guessing it came from the hope of reviving the character, but also hoping that making her life political and diverse will somehow make money.
I have enjoyed America in the past, and the story in general is fun, while the art is excellent, but there is a sense of cashing in on politics and the themes of social media. This really never works. Stick to fiction, folks.
