In this gorgeous graphic memoir, Joe Ciardiello gracefully weaves together his Italian family history and the mythology of the American West while paying homage to the classic movie and TV Westerns. Featuring John Ford, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Sophia Loren, and many more, this book is a paean to Hollywood and a love letter to the Western.

Illustrator Joe Ciardiello's new book celebrates the unique relationship between American western mythology and all things classically Italian. This odd but potent mash-up of cultures was first brought to international attention back in the late '60s with Sergio Leone's "Spaghetti Western" films, but that's clearly not the whole story. The sharp historic connections come fast and furious in this dazzling paperback overview, many of them more than a little surprising. And when we're reminded that TV's iconic, tear-shedding countenance of native Americans was in truth provided by an Italian actor, this link seems undeniable. Deftly complimenting journal-style captions, Joe Ciardiello's wisely sardonic and satiric line congeals into some of the most memorable creations of his spectacular career, the artist's own childhood obsession with western history -- and western movies -- fueling an incessantly fertile brain. Best served with fine wine and a plateful of pasta (just don't splatter the pages), A FISTFUL OF DRAWINGS is a feast for anyone who enjoys offbeat cultural parallels spiced with potent creative eccentricity. Order and enjoy!

I'm up for any examples of Joe's fantastic illustration work, and this collection provides the bonus of a compelling story of personal and cultural development via the Italian experience in America. A fine book by one of our modern masters.

You've seen Joe Ciardiello's delightful, eerily accurate caricatures in the pages (and on the covers) of "The New York Times Book Review," "The New Yorker," "Rolling Stone" and "Time." Now Mr. Ciardiello has written (and drawn) a fascinating and delightful book in which he incorporates numerous drawings from Western films, TV Westerns, spaghetti Westerns, and notable Italians, into a narrative about his own childhood memories and his Italian-American heritage. It works, and beautifully. The book contains spot-on drawings of such seemingly disparate figures as both Iron Eyes and Buffalo Bill Cody, Ernest Borgnine, Clayton Moore, Al Capone, Sergio Leone, John Ford, Clint Eastwood, Claudia Cardinale, Annie Oakley and Enrico Caruso - just to name a few. Highly entertaining and highly recommended!
