I write comic books! Growing up, I always wanted to write comics, but I ended up trying my hand at fiction first. I got my MFA from Columbia University, published a book of short stories with The Dial Press in 2006 called Voodoo Heart, then finally broke into comics in 2009 and haven't looked back since. I've worked extensively for DC Comics, writing such titles as Batman, Detective Comics, Justice League, the comic event books DC Dark Knights Metal and Death Metal, and Swamp Thing, among others. I've also created a number of series with some great co-creators and partners -- books like We Have Demons, Clear, Night of the Ghoul, Nocterra, American Vampire, Wytches, the Wake, AD: After Death, and more... I live in NY with my wife, Jeanie and our three boys. I am also a big fan of Elvis Presley.

Where the first volume of A.D. had a vagueness to its story, leaving lots of questions and a very tenuous grasp on what it was about, the second book is much clearer in its approach, or at least much more relevant to the story as a whole. We get an idea of the origin of this world After Death, as well as the idea of cycles and why the people in this world are so forgetful. Snyder poses questions such as why would a person not want to die (perhaps obvious) and how could one cope with such a life? The answer is in cycles. People cycle through jobs, cycle through spouses, as though living different lives, choosing to forget the harmful bits of life and remember only the pleasant. Sounds utopian.

Obviously, Jonah Cooke, the main character, is not happy with this set-up.

Just as before, Snyder alternates between prose sections and comic sections. The prose indicates flashbacks, to before the the cure for death was found, while the comics show the present moment. This time around, the prose and comic sections are more closely-intertwined. Characters and thoughts that show up in the prose come up in the comic. We learn how Jonah's penchant for thieving led him to the opportunity to live in the mountains, away from death, and we also get hints of what happened to the rest of the world. Hints of environmental catastrophe, a theme that has been showing up more and more often in comics.

Jeff Lemire's artwork is just as integral to the story as Snyder's writing. Lemire's watercolors are a unique way to paint a story, adding to the surreal quality, giving a new look to a new era in time. While the prose sections are dominated by Snyder's writing, with some small drawings of Lemire's to highlight important symbols, the comics belong to Lemire, with small pieces of dialogue written by Snyder to help move along the plot.

After a shaky, though engrossing, first issue, things are clicking much more smoothly as the story enters its final chapter. I'm looking forward to what these two have up their sleeves in the finale.

*minor spoilage*

A lot more is explained in this volume. How he came to be. The mastermind behind the cure. And that there is life below. The writer manages to reveal a lot and keep the suspense with his inevitable journey below.

Spotlight Comic Book Review (9/10) "Amazing"
A.D. After Death Book Two
Writer: Scott Snyder
Illustrator: Jeff Lemire
Plot: Jonah Cooke has lived multiple life times now that disease, sickness, and death have been cured. However, he cannot remember the previous life times and only remembers his most current life. Here we learn that Jonah used to be a skilled thief who was instrumental in finding the cure for death...
Snyder and Lemire still manage to keep things intriguing for me in the second issue of this three issue mini-series. Alot is revealed about Jonah's past life and some things are revealed about how the world came upon the cure for disease. His relationship with Errant is also a very intriguing relationship and Errant seems like the type of man that uses other people to get what he wants. My favorite part of this issue had to be when Cooke started hearing voices through the radio and the world below the mountains and beneath the dark clouds. You wondered if Cooke was losing his grip on reality or was he really seeing and hearing what he thought he was seeing and hearing especially because no one around him seemed to be. This element of horror and suspense added to an already stellar book to me and I would recommend anyone to pick this issue up - especially if you loved the first issue.
