This hardcover also contains Rai 13-16, which serves as a prequel to the events of Rai 1-12 and 4001 AD. Here we learn more about how New Japan came to be in the state that it's in, and about the previous Rai's who were its knights. These issues are a mixed bag, with some peak moments (Rai 13 is one of the most devastating single issues I've read) and others that felt a bit like filler. Good context to have, but it almost feels like a story that could've been told in a couple of issues as opposed to 4, and inserting them in the midst of the main story feels like it messes with the pacing a bit.
Lastly, there are the one shot issues that highlight the various Valiant heroes of the 4001 universe, and while these too are a mixed bag, they're fascinating regardless and do a good job of adding richness to the world. The XO Manowar issue is a bite sized story that is regardless extremely cool and ties directly into 4001. The Bloodshot issue is good and contains some typically fine writing from Jeff Lemire, despite feeling like the most unnecessary offshoot of the bunch. The Shadowman story was not very good and probably my least favorite part of this entire edition, despite having a very cool premise that I feel could have really been the best story here had the execution been more solid. And lastly there is War Mother, a new and very promising character that stars in a solid story here that looks to be an exciting way for Valiant to stay in this universe going forward.
This deluxe edition, despite its occasional inconsistencies, remains one of the most exciting and engaging sci fi stories I've read in comics, and is a universe I can't wait to see Valiant return to some day. Be sure to read the masterful issues of Rai leading up to this before taking the plunge into 4001, and be treated to the ultimate sci fi saga from arguably the best publisher in comics today.
