Well well, who would have guessed it. After what was a lackluster first issue, Andy Diggle really comes through with issue #2. This was a simple story, it reads fast but it was highly entertaining. We see Oliver Queen really struggling to survive at first, and it looks questionable whether he will or not. However, he is fueled to continue by his need for vengeance against the would-be-friend who betrayed him. However, while he is there Oliver changes and is "reborn” if you will. He learns to survive, he learns to hone his archer skills, and becomes a true hunter at one with nature. He actually becomes happy and you as the reader are genuinely happy for him. I think that quick metamorphosis is what made this issue so enjoyable. The way Ollie was portrayed in the first issue caused you to really not like him very much. Now that he has changed you really start to like him better and that makes the over all issue much more enjoyable. He even becomes less selfish while there and starts to become concerned about the things that happen to others. Shortly after arriving on the island he stumbles upon a village that was burned and villagers that were killed, he immediately ask "Who did this?" with a rage in his eyes like he was looking for justice. That kind of sent chills down my spine.
He really becomes at home on the island but toward the end of the issue he sees a plane and he shoots a flaming arrow to get the planes attention, and boy he does as the issue ends with gunmen in the plane shooting at Ollie from the sky.
Here we have more DC retconning, but we expected it at this point didn't we? Originally it was Pirates on a boat, then drug runners on a boat. Now we don't know who these gunmen are, but for sure that's not a boat! I can't wait to see who these dudes are and why they shooting at the Green Arrow.
Good book, solid 4 out of 5.
