Wow, I just read Batman #666. Talk about a great issue, this was fantastic. I ask the question about whether Morrison was drinking jokingly, because this issue was out there. Really off the wall. But I loved it none the less.
The son of the Bat, Damian, that Grant Morrison introduced us to a few issues back is here again in this story about a Gotham, post Batman, in an almost apocalyptic future setting where Damian has come back to take the place of his father and serve as a darker Batman in a darker time. This was an intriguing story about an insane killer who thinks of himself as the anti-Christ and has decided to ring in the battle of Armageddon in Gotham city.
In this issue we learn some interesting things about Damian. First, Damian at this point in his life has come to respect both Bruce and dick, stating that he would never be as good as either of them. Second, Damian may have been involved in the death of Batman. A statement from Barbara, like “That monster’s responsible for the death of a good friend,” seems to implicate Damian in Batman’s or perhaps Dick’s death. Third, we learn that on the night the Batman died, Damian sold his soul to the devil to keep Gotham safe. It apparently has made him immune to gunfire, perhaps immortal, or maybe invulnerable? Forth, he lives with a cat names Alfred.
Another thing that caught my eye was the fact that the villain in this issue was supposed to be the last of three insane replacement Batmen who haunted his father years ago. Now the next issue begins an arc by Morrison delving into “The Batmen of All Nations.” So we might get to see this villain who was killed by Damian in the future actually appear for the first time in present Batman continuity in the next arc.
Great book, 4 out of 5
