There's been a lot of hype leading up to the Secret Invasion, but with many things over-hyped, will it live up to it?
Issue 1 of the Secret invasion with its 4 variant covers (5 covers in total) introduces us to the main plot. The premise of the story is an interesting one, a modern take on Invasion of the Body Snatchers or the Human form Cylons from Battlestar Galactica (THIS FRIDAY!!!), with Skrulls replacing heroes in the Marvel Universe.
The story reads like a roller coaster ride, making sporadic jumps as the story is told. Its irky-jerky nature is a result of having to set up multiple story lines within the first issue, which will inevitably be pursued through various titles (which means more titles sold). The story isn't bad, but because it has so much to set up in so little time, its pacing suffers and so does the experience.
There are a few obvious plot points, since the story follows a basic formula, and has a few of the required "twists". One twist in particular reminds me of Giffen's run on the Legion of Super-Heroes back in the 90's, and I loved Giffen's run on the LSH so I'll be curious to see how that develops.
All in all it wasn't a bad read but it wasn't a great read either. I'll chalk it up to the "TV Pilot" theory, the pilot wasn't great, but I'll still give the show a chance.
