DC: The New Frontier has been, in my opinion, one of the best things to come out of DC Comics in a long time. Now with an exceptional animated movie adaptation recently released, it was a no brainer to pick up this special.
The special is made up of three stories, and includes an homage to advertising at the time. Advertising fictional comics based on Silver Age DC characters (the "The Legend of John Henry" was a nice touch, and a potential future special, hint hint DC).
The first story tells of the epic battle, only hinted at in the original series, between Superman and Batman. The story is a perfect addition to the original content, only its slightly disappointing that it wasn't released prior so it could be included in the original trades (I see an "Ultimate Edition" in the future).
The second story tells of the first meeting of Robin and Kid Flash and makes for a great read. The story reminds me of some of the filler stories in the back of my Dad's Detective Comics issues, that I would read without permission.
The final story about Wonder Woman and Black Canary, by D. Cooke and J. Bone, was so disappointing that I didn't finish reading it. Its a shame that it was included in an otherwise exceptional book.
Finally the issue includes a section promoting the DVD release. This section was cool but for the most part the images are small and hard to see. It would have been nice if the character designs were larger and more prominent, considering the quality of the Wonder Woman story, it would have been better to remove that content to make way for more space for the character designs. Although I would imagine that the "Ultimate Edition" may also include more space dedicated to the DVD artwork.
