Top reviews from the United States

I love Gaiman, his works are great. The artwork is exceptional, as usual, but I think I'll stick to print graphics. Tall pages wind up sideways on my computer screen, which means I have to pick it up and turn it physically to read it, then the next page is across the screen, so I set it back down only to pick it up again further on because it's all sideways again. And it's too small to read comfortably. I'll wait till this comes out in a book format and buy that. And dig out a magnifying glass if I must.

Seeing all the bad reviews about the formatting, I was worried about buying this, but really wanted to read it. I saw the comment from Amazon that said the formatting has been fixed and it can be redownloaded, so I took a chance.

I was able to easily read the it on my iPad. Each page is first displayed in its entirety. You can't change the orientation or pinch or zoom. When you click the right side of the image, each section of the image is then zoomed so you can easily read the text. Each touch takes you to the next frame of the image and then you are taken to the next page — again, displayed in its entirety ... And so on. Quite readable, very enjoyable. You will not be disappointed.

This first issue introduces you to a strange world and its main characters. It is leaving me with a lot of questions and I can't wait to read the next issue.

So, for those of you that we're waiting for a formatting update, the wait is over. Get it. You won't be disappointed.

A beautifully illustrated story that continues the strong Sandman tradition Neil Gaiman gave to us decades ago. J.H. Williams' artwork, which provides an ample dreamlike environment, is the perfect complement to Gaiman's script. I've long been a fan of Gaiman's work and this new chapter in the Sandman epic definitely delivers.

Although the story is great and I'm thrilled to have new Sandman stories coming out, the formatting of this e-book made reading the story extremely frustrating. Being able to put the book into portrait view would have made most of the text and images perfectly readable, but for some reason it's locked into landscape view. It doesn't support multitouch (pinch and zoom) for enlarging sections of the page, but instead makes the user double tap to both expand and contract pre-set sections of the page. More freedom in how to view the pages would make future issues much more enjoyable to read.

Re-entering the fantastical world of Neil Gaiman's Sandman has been something I have been looking forward to for almost a decade. Having said that this first issue of Overture knocked my socks off and left me wanting all the issues right now. Well worth the wait! The digital format does still have some kinks to work out upon the first version you could not zoom into panels easily, but after the update much better!

Or an old beginning. Gaiman et al have deftly drawn us back to Dream's story. Maybe even Dream's dreams. This first episode has already hooked me; excellent graphics, stunning layout, and an interesting mystery (shall we see Cain soon?). Can't wait for the next episode. Works well on Kindle Fire.

I'd like to add my voice to the other complaints made here. I have no idea whether this comic is good or not. Given the fact that it's written by Neil Gaiman, I strongly suspect that it's very good. I don't know if that is the case or not though. The reason I don't know if it is or isn't a wonderful example of the graphic arts is that I can't read it! The font is very small. So small that I can't read it. I also can not enlarge the view/magnification.

I had assumed that this would be formatted similarly to the way the Kindle version of Watchmen is formatted. Watchmen is a joy to read on the Kindle Fire HD. The format of Watchmen is absolutely brilliant!

The format of Sandman: Overture is absolutely idiotic! It's impossible to read! What pinhead thought this would be a good idea? Perhaps an even better question might be, "What idiot actually approved this as ready to ship to the customer?" Is there no quality assurance program in place to prevent screwup like this from reaching the customer? I would have hoped that both Vertigo and Amazon would have inspectors who's job is to assure that the customer is receiving a high quality product for their money. I don't pay money for an ebook so that I can NOT read it!

Well I've been wanting to look this over for a while, not to mention all the others. This was a bit of a pet down but I do plan on continuing the series, hoping it will get better, like any series.
